5 Reasons to Love Timber Framing

Timber Framing dates back to the medieval times, meaning there’s got to be quite the reason to keep utilizing the building method. It offers a lot of structural benefits, as well as an aesthetically pleasing look. There’s a lot to cover about why we love timber framing and have chosen to make it our way of building, but we’ll keep it short and sweet and cover a few of the most popular.

One of our favorites is the fact you are able to see the structure. In more modern building techniques, the bones of the building are hidden behind walls, and often time not as pretty. Timber framing offers very unique joints and beautiful beams. Being able to create exposed framing that will be visible allows the work to be fully appreciated for the beautiful work it is.

We were very picky when deciding which types of wood we wanted to build with. From the start we knew we needed to choose woods that were study and offered stability while having nice grain patterns and a range of tones. The warmth that exposed timber gives off is one of the top reasons people chose to build with it, and is another reason we love it.

The sense of traditionalism is one of the key points of the craft, and another one of our favorites. The frame building itself is old school, using mortise and tenon joints. Many of the tools being used to craft the wood, prepare it for building, and assembling the structure are still very traditional tools. The hand tools we most commonly used are the same our ancestors would have used many years ago.

You are excited to see your new build, and so are we. Lucky for you, timber framing is one of the quickest erecting types of building there is. Because most of the work is done off site, once materials are brought in and assembly begins it is a quick process. The beams are generally put together in smaller bent and truss sections that will later be lifted, positioned, and connected.

Timber framing offers outstanding insulation. The natural timber itself offers a lot of natural insulation, but SIP’s are commonly found in exposed timber buildings. But what is a SIP you ask? They are structural insulated panels. SIPS are pre-fabricated panels that create energy efficient walls. They create a tight insulation around the home that, of course, helps save energy.

We love what we do, and love that you love of timberframing. To plan out your next build, or to talk to us about an idea you have, give us a call. We’d love to talk to you about how exposed beams can fit into your next plans.
